Stress! A negative concept that can have an impact on one’s mental and physical well-being. Stress is the body’s reaction to any stimuli that disturb its equilibrium. During a stress response, many of the body’s physiological functions are altered leading to physical imbalances and illnesses.
Stress compromises the immune system and may result in chronic infections, fluid retention, constipation, moodiness, depression, irritability, anxiety, osteoporosis, blood clots, allergic reactions, high cholesterol, blood sugar imbalances, high blood pressure, varicose veins, lack of concentration, drowsiness, poor memory, headaches, migraines, fatigue, sleep disorders, bloating, bladder infections, muscle and joint swelling and pain, hypothyroidism, skin problems, fibrocyctic breast disease, fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, PMS, menopausal symptoms and multiple sclerosis, weight gain, swelling of eyelids, brittle nails and poor vision, and others.
Shedding one’s life of those stressful events, people, demands, high pressure jobs as well as addressing unresolved emotional wounds is vital for stress reduction.
Other practices we should incorporate in our lifestyle:
Breath: Breathing deeply and slowly lessens stress on the heart and enhances the entire cardiovascular system, allows for greater circulation and generates feelings of calmness.
Sleep: Nature intended sleep as a nightly ritual of rest and rejuvenation. Lack of good quality sleep is a major factor in generating high levels of mental toxins.
Massage: Rubbing the skin with herbal increases circulation and draw toxins out of the body.
Aromatherapy and Herbology: Essential oils and plants are pleasant and effective ways that allow us to create a peaceful and soothing atmosphere.
Nutrition: Food has been use as a natural remedy to cure diseases. The correct combination of foods, vitamins and minerals can provide the necessary balance.
Exercise (Yoga) and Meditation: Meditation helps combat the daily build-up of stress, making it easier for the mind to shut off for the night.
In a side note: I suggest the practice of yoga postures in such manner that does not interfere with the believes of those whose is against the practice of Yoga as a philosophy. In contemporary times, the physical postures of yoga are used to alleviate health problems, reduce stress and increase range of motion, and flexibility.
